At Ribston we recognise the importance of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG). 

Our Careers programme spans the full seven years of study at Ribston Hall, with a tailored programme of activity for each age group. It forms part of the PHSE curriculum, during which we deliver a range of practical enterprise and employability activities to equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and capitalise on the opportunities presented to them. 

The careers programme is embedded throughout the curriculum with opportunities for learning about different careers delivered through every day teaching so that students understand the relevance of their subjects and learning. The programme supports and enhances this and careers learning is sequenced through a student’s time at Ribston. For further information on our Careers programme, please contact our Careers Lead,

Gloucestershire Careers Hub – Apprenticeship and Technical pathways in Gloucestershire - Watch back

In October 5000 people tuned in live to the Apprenticeship and Technical Education pathways in Gloucestershire broadcast. 

The aim of the broadcast was to help parents/guardians understand the landscape of post 16 options within the county of Gloucestershire. We heard from six different apprenticeship providers and organisations that deliver vocational qualifications, including T-Levels and Independent Training Providers. This knowledge will allow parents/carers to support their young person when it comes to making decisions about their next steps.

Careers and PHSE

We run a series of Personal Development days throughout the year when we invite outside organisations to school to run sessions with the students. The subject matter of these sessions varies between year groups. Each session is age-appropriate and these examples demonstrate the type of education we focus on during these sessions:

• Year 7 – Financial management, including bank accounts and statements
• Year 8 – Human rights, the law and discrimination
• Year 9 – Citizenship, careers, job types and the workplace, as well as employment law and team building with the RAF. 
• Year 10 – Mock job interviews with local employers or higher education staff
• Year 11 – Post 16 options, labour market information. target setting and goals. One to one interviews with careers advisor
• Year 12/13 – Fortnightly PSHE/Careers sessions on interviews and careers targets. Visits to careers fairs and universities, meeting potential employers and participating in work experience. 

 

Opportunities for work experience, talks and apprenticeship vacancies are regularly signposted in school and the daily student briefing email. 

We work closely with gfirstLEP, an Education and Skills team based in Gloucestershire, who support our careers team in delivering mentoring, advice and guidance in support of the Gatsby Career Benchmarks, which are part of the government careers strategy.

Careers conversations

We enjoy welcoming speakers into school, particularly former students, to give industry insights and specific career advice to interested students. We host multiple Careers Conversations each year and have recently hosted talks on careers in law, fashion, computer games design, nursing and teaching.

Green Careers Week 
Green Careers Week is a fantastic new initiative launched last year. In 2023, it took place in November to provide young people with an insight into careers that specifically protect the environment and will help the UK achieve its pledge of reaching Net Zero by 2050. Staff and the Career Programme
Staff at Ribston Hall have access to the Careers strategy and careers programme information through their internal online platform, which is regularly updated and reviewed. They can access the careers programme and details on careers provision. Careers resources are available electronically and hardcopies are located in the library.
The library hosts information about jobs, what qualifications you need and opportunities available. Staff also have access to sixth form and university prospectuses. Staff are invited to provide feedback on the careers provision and are supported by the Careers Lead Mr Andy Barnard ab@ribstonhall.gloucs.sch.uk.
