Transforming Waste into Wonder
Ribston’s textiles students crafted their designs from upcycled fabrics and repurposed materials. Each outfit was a unique expression of sustainable fashion, embodying the students' commitment to creativity and environmental responsibility. One of the standout pieces of the night—and the winning design—was a breathtaking dress made from a repurposed parachute by Neve McAusland, modelled by Eva Nunez, which captured the audience's attention and epitomised the eco-friendly spirit of the event.
Inspiring Sustainable Design
Driven by the vision of Mrs Finch, who is Ribston Hall’s Curriculum Lead for Design, the Sustainable Fashion Show became a vibrant showcase of eco-conscious creativity. Mrs Finch’s commitment to sustainable fashion offered students a unique platform to explore their artistic potential, encouraging them to design with purpose and confidence. Student creators experimented with aspects of fashion like runway presentation, costuming, and art textiles. There was an “ethereal” feel to the evening, which created a magical atmosphere, with teachers and students transforming the space into a secret garden adorned with mushroom-inspired decorations.
Cross-Department Collaboration
Another standout aspect of the show that made the evening so special was the cross-departmental collaboration throughout the event. Art students added visual flair with displays from a recent house art competition, while the Biology department and Eco Committee shared insights into the ecological benefits of sustainable fashion. Food Tech students prepared delicious canapés using ethically sourced ingredients for the audience to enjoy. Earlier in the day, the Languages department hosted a Bake-Off Competition, and guests were able to purchase the tasty treats during the interval. Head Student Ele Breeze summed up the atmosphere perfectly: “It was absolutely amazing to see a wide variety of departments coming together to create such a majestic showcase of talent and artistry.”
Expert Judges Inspire Creativity
The designs were reviewed by an expert panel that brought diverse perspectives from the fashion and design world. Ribston alum Paul Aspinall, a professional costume maker, offered his insights from years of experience creating for stage and screen. Katy Coughlan, Operations Manager at the esteemed British shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser, added her expertise in craftsmanship and sustainability, while Terri Lazenbury, a designer known for her eco-friendly approach, encouraged students to keep innovating with the environment in mind.
Fostering Confidence and Originality
As each model walked the runway, it was clear that Ribston Hall had fostered not only their creative skills but also their confidence. The students presented their designs with professionalism and poise, showcasing their talents in an event that encouraged meaningful engagement with sustainable practices. Events like the Sustainable Fashion Show offer invaluable opportunities for Ribston students to build skills, express themselves, and learn about responsible choices, embodying the school’s commitment to holistic education.
Ribston Hall’s Sustainable Fashion Show was a powerful reminder that fashion and environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand. With events like these, Ribston Hall continues to inspire its students and the broader community to envision—and create—a brighter, more sustainable future.
